Headmaster's Welcome

F. Christopher Chirieleison

Dear Phelpsians and Guests:

Welcome to The Phelps School’s website.  If you are visiting us in cyberspace for the first time, I believe that you will enjoy learning more about our unique program.  Those of you who already belong to our community as alumni, students and parents will understand the pleasure I take from representing such a winning solution to the challenges of modern education.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is quoted as having said, "Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be and he will become as he can and should be."  Goethe was an 18th Century German statesman and philosopher of whom Napoleon once said, “Look, there is a man.”  I believe that this notion of searching for the ideal in each person expresses what is at the core of The Phelps School’s philosophy of education.  Collectively and as individuals, our community strives to live according to certain fundamental principles which empower us intellectually, physically, and spiritually to achieve our innate potential as human beings.  Though there is considerable diversity among our students and faculty, we communally celebrate the Affirmations of POWER listed below.

I think…  Positively
I serve
... Others
I seek…
Wisdom
I pursue…
Excellence
I live… Responsibly

As articulated by our mission statement, "The Phelps School is dedicated to a personalized education for the boy who seeks success academically, personally, and socially…This philosophy of dedication to the total development of each boy is accentuated by the disciplined atmosphere, small classes, and daily tutorial support."

In our 63rd academic year, we continue to pioneer those pedagogic methods which facilitate academic, personal, and social success.  I can tell you, having interviewed hundreds of families over the years, that the idea which inspired Norman T. Phelps, Sr. to begin a school "dedicated to the individual boy" has never been more relevant than it is today.  The Phelps School's time of educating boys according to their interests and abilities has come.

Please spend the time necessary to become more familiar with the advantages of a Phelps education, and then call our Admissions Office to learn more about this rare educational opportunity.

Warm regards,
