Assistant Head of School for Academics
Welcome to the Academics Section! Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, The Phelps School's comprehensive academic program offers courses which enable each boy to achieve scholastic success. Our teaching staff is dedicated to implementing educational strategies that meet each student's individual abilities, needs and interests. Administration and faculty are in partnership to improve every young man's ability to read and write competently, speak with clarity, problem-solve and think critically and carry on a passion for learning.
Graduates from Phelps are able to attend college and are well prepared for a successful path through life. Our average class size is roughly seven and our student-teacher ratio is 5:1. Students are evaluated on effort and achievement. Small class sizes, structured study halls and daily tutorial sessions provide occasions for each boy to receive the extra attention necessary for success at The Phelps School.
In addition to realizing success in coursework and athletic endeavors, our goal is for each young man to embrace a life abundant with opportunities to make positive contributions to society. Students frequently enter The Phelps School presuming its daily regiment is restrictive and controlling. By practicing and instilling the Affirmations of POWER, these same students begin to realize that our structured yet caring atmosphere is the fundamental basis for developing the self-discipline necessary for success far removed from the classroom.
Curriculum focuses on the core disciplines of English, mathematics, science, and social studies. We also offer an English as a Second Language (ESL) program for international students seeking to acquire the essential skills for transitioning into a new culture and language. As well as the traditional required subjects, Phelps offers classes in study skills, information technology, work seminar, SAT prep, culinary arts, personal finance, public speaking, Transitions College, fitness, writing seminar, ethics, health and physical education. A mandatory afternoon activity period allows for a wide range of interests from athletics to various activities.
Students are best motivated by teachers who care about and inspire them. Our faculty serves as advisors, role models and mentors. In our classrooms, students are challenged without being overwhelmed. The Phelps School's close community and residential setting provide an excellent opportunity to build long lasting relationships. Students benefit from the "teachable moments" provided by the vast amount of time they spend with staff members outside of classroom, while faculty enjoy the intrinsic value of dedicating themselves to our philosophy of an individualized education.
Our Academic Support Program (ASP) uniquely demonstrates The Phelps School's motto of "dedication to the individual boy." With an average class size of three and a well-trained staff led by a learning specialist, this program fosters an exceptional educational environment for boys identified with a learning difference. At Phelps, encouragement has been proven vital to a young man's achievement level and to boosting his self-esteem.
Are you looking for the right school for someone in grades 7 through 12 and post-graduate? Do you know a young man who is not realizing his full potential or who has a diagnosed learning difference? If so, I strongly encourage you to explore your alternatives. Then, be sure to contact our admissions office. It's a decision for which you will be forever thankful. I guarantee.
Sincerely,
Daniel E. Knopp
