Dress Code





Academic Dress: Worn Mondays through Thursdays.  Navy blue school blazer, white or light blue dress shirt, tie, khaki slacks (no cargo pants), leather dress belt, dark socks, dress shoes.  On Tuesdays, a white dress shirt and the school tie must be worn.

A navy blue uniform v-neck sweater or navy blue uniform v-neck sweater vest may be worn over a dress shirt and tie with the navy blue school blazer.

During warm weather at the Headmaster’s discretion, students may wear navy blue, white, or light blue polo shirts instead of a blazer, dress shirt and tie. 

During the winter, white or grey Phelps turtlenecks may be worn with the navy blue school blazer instead of a dress shirt and tie. A navy blue uniform v-neck sweater or navy blue uniform v-neck sweater vest may be worn over the turtleneck.

  • Hair is to be kept clean and combed.  Generally, haircuts are to be maintained in a conservative style.  Hair is to be cut so it falls above the collar and off the eyes.  Sideburns are not to extend below the ear lobe.  A student who consistently violates the School’s haircut policy will be subject to disciplinary action.  
  • Students are not to wear earrings at any time, and body piercing of any type is not permitted.  
  • Boys must be clean shaven at all times, including weekends.  Facial hair is not permitted.
  • When ties are worn they must be properly tied.  Shirt collars must be buttoned at all times when worn with a tie. 
  • A short sleeve shirt worn over a long sleeve shirt or insulated-type undershirt is not permitted. 
  • A boy’s underwear should never be worn in a way which displays it to others. 
  • Belts must have buckles; tie belts are not acceptable.  Belts are a required part of daily dress. 
  • All shirts are to be tucked in at all times. 
  • Military-style boots or work boots, as well as military or camouflage outfits, are not permitted at any time.  Boots may be worn in snowy weather only at the Dean’s discretion.
  • No sweatshirts may be worn during the academic day (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM) except on Fridays. 
  • No hats, caps, visors, bandannas, or sunglasses may be worn during the academic day (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM). 
  • In cold weather, outer coats (not sweatshirts) may be worn between classes over the blazer but must be removed inside buildings. 
  • No soccer, lacrosse, or baseball cleats are permitted in any building or vehicle where they may damage the carpeting or flooring.  They are to be removed before entering a dorm.  
  • Oversized clothing, especially oversized pants worn especially low, are not permitted at any time. 
  • Jeans and jean jackets may be worn only on weekends.  Jeans of any color are not classroom dress.  Painters Pants are not acceptable as class dress.  
  • Coats and ties are optional at breakfast, dinner, and tutorial.  
  • Wednesdays: Those on Commendations may wear khakis, any collared shirt, sneakers.  
  • Fridays: All may wear khakis, any collared shirt, sneakers.
  • Those who have excessive violations of the Dress Code may be required to be in Academic Dress on Fridays at the Dean’s discretion.
