The Phelps School views sports as training for the challenges boys will face later in their lives, learning to get along with their peers, acquiring a sense of fair play, and developing the ability to handle the joy of winning and the disappointment of losing. This is true whether boys are competing against a tough interscholastic opponent or just playing in a friendly spur-of-the-moment game with friends

The School offers a comprehensive athletic program. Our teams compete in the Tri-County Independent School League in soccer, cross-country, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, baseball and golf. All these teams have had their share of success over the years, and, in fact, several of them have won numerous league championships. On campus, soccer and lacrosse fields, four all-weather tennis courts, a track and outdoor basketball and volleyball courts provide opportunities for both organized and informal sports. During the winter, the basketball court and the well equipped fitness center in the gymnasium are always busy.

Horseback riding has been a tradition at Phelps since the School's founding, and the indoor equestrian center offers all levels of instruction in horsemanship and horse care. While the riding program is no longer officially part of the School, interested students are still able to participate.
