WELCOME TO SOUTH BEATTIE HALL AT THE PHELPS SCHOOL!

I look forward to working with the young men residing in South Beattie Hall.  This year the Head Dorm Parent (residing adjacent to dormitory) is Richard Grape.  I am the Assistant Dorm Parent (residing on campus, not adjacent to dorm).  Both of us will spend an equal share of time providing residential and academic support to your son. The sense of community, pride, and brotherhood that your son will experience is the hallmark of The Phelps School.

This year, Mr. Grape and I are implementing an ethics curriculum within South Beattie. Every two weeks we will meet with all of the boys to discuss a short reading or inspirational phrase.  The ethics symposium will help the boys understand and embrace the values / philosophies necessary to become well-rounded men.  In addition, this activity will promote communal discussion and internal reflection.  It is our hope the symposia will assist the boys in making the good/right decisions when faced with the difficult situations that accompany adulthood.

Welcome to South Beattie!

There are several rules we ask the boys to follow and a few are also relevant for you to be familiar with regards to phone calls, weekend policy, mail, and other living responsibilities.
The Phelps School Student/Parent Handbook is an essential resource for information on school policies and procedures.  Please take the time to review the handbook, but feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns that remain unanswered or unclear.

First, the phone number for the dormitory is (610) 540-0161. The best time to reach your son is between 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. or 9:00 – 10:00 p.m. on weekdays. The phone will be off the hook during study hall hours and then after lights-out at 10:30 p.m. Please be considerate when trying to contact your son by cell phone, as well, since this is more difficult for us to regulate.  Should there be an emergency, please call the mobile phone number for the Administrator in Charge (AIC).  That number is (484) 325-0849.

Next, if you are planning to allow your son permission to leave for the weekend, then please contact the dorm parent no later than Tuesday of that week. We both can be reached at the school number (610) 644-1754.  Please be prepared to let us know when your son will both depart and return (boys are to return no later than 7:15 p.m. on Sunday night), how he will travel, and whether he will need additional money from his account in the business office. This information will help us make arrangements to take your son to the train station or airport, if necessary. In addition, please check the school calendar before making any travel arrangements for your son.

If you are planning to visit on the weekend, please do your best to plan your stay between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Again, be sure to notify the office or a dorm parent upon arrival. Contacting your son by mail is also convenient. Mail is distributed to the boys each weekday.  Please be specific in addressing letters and packages, for that matter, as such:

Finally, remember that theft can occur anywhere, and even though we are a small community, boys should be responsible with all of their belongings. Each boy must bear the sole responsibility for the safekeeping and care of all personal items kept on campus. Each student is also responsible for damage to his room or other school property. We thank you for your assistance in these matters.

Speaking for Mr. Grape and myself, we thank you for the privilege of working with your son.  Should you have any questions, please contact us at the email/phone number below.

Warmest Regards,

Tyler Wilkins
Richard K. Grape, Jr.
