Phelps Soccer Wins Tri-County League Championship

Everything fell into place for the Phelps boys' soccer team yesterday.

The Lions were healthy for once this season, playing on a quality field on a crisp, clear fall day and looking to win a Tri-County League title.

Lee Ziegler made his presence felt on the offensive side of the ball in the first half, then stood out in goal as Phelps downed regular-season champion Barrack Hebrew, 1-0, to win the playoff title at Ursinus College.

The Cougars (15-4) had beaten the Lions (15-3) for the title last year, then picked up a couple of 2-1 decisions against Phelps during the regular season for a three-game winning streak. The streak ended yesterday.

"We played more as a team," first-year coach Matt Scavitto said. "The wide field at Ursinus was to our advantage. We were able to spread the field. Our touches were a lot better. It was a step-up on that field with our skill players."

Youn Kim scored the lone goal of the game at the 11-minute mark, assisted by Ziegler, who moved into goal with 15 minutes left in the contest.

He took over for Eric Chang, who missed the Lions' last four games with a dislocated elbow, and stopped four shots. Ziegler then proceeded to preserve the win by stopping a penalty shot and two direct kicks over a four-minute stretch.
