All returning ASP English students and new ASP English students enrolled as of August 1st are required to read any one book from The Phelps School ASP Summer Reading List. Students must choose a book based on their September grade level. Students are to be prepared to give an oral report on their chosen book during the first week of class in September.
Summer Reading Assignment Guidelines:
1. Students must keep a written journal as they read their book.
2. Students must take notes on each chapter – notes can be in either outline or paragraph format. Book chapters must be clearly labeled in your notebook. This is worth 100 points.
3. Notes must include the following:
A. Title and Author
B. Setting and setting details (time and place)
C. Characters and character details (description)
D. Plot – sequence of events (beginning, middle, ending)
E. Opinion
The written journal notes will be used to make note cards for the oral book report. Note cards will be done in class during the first couple of days of school.
The Oral Presentation will be explained by your English teacher the last week of school and again in September.
