Phelps Wins Home Opener

"The JV Lions Soccer team defeated Barrack Hebrew by a score of 4-2 yesterday. The Lions came out on fire, with multiple scoring chances early in the first half. Hunter Davidson (North Wales, PA) finally put one in the back of the net to give the team the early 1-0 lead. It was the team's first goal of the season. After allowing Barrack to tie the game at 1-1 the Lions fought back and dominated the final 15 minutes of the half. Freshman goal keeper Rodrigo Colon (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) secured an errant pass in the back and boomed a punt over the heads of every defender that bounced to Tim Weatherby (Ventnor City, NJ) who blasted it past the goalie to put the Lions ahead for good going into the half at 2-1. In the second half, Weatherby added a second goal and just missed getting the hat trick when he blasted a shot off the crossbar in the closing moments. With the team ahead 3-1, Max Escamilla, normally a defender, got in on the scoring action, putting home a left footed shot to put the team ahead 4-1. After surrendering a late goal the final tally was 4-2. The win improved the Lions record to 1-1 for the season, and put them at 1-0 in Tri-County Conference games. The team next takes the field on Tuesday at home against conference foe Delaware Valley Friends."
