Phelps School junior guard/forward and captain Damien Williams became the school's second 1,000-point career scorer Feb. 17 when he racked up 12 first-quarter points in Phelps' 61-21 victory against visiting Woodlynde in the Tri-County League boys' basketball quarterfinals.
Williams entered the game needing 12 points to reach the 1,000 mark. He reached the milestone on a three-point shot from the right corner (with an assist from junior Zach Hagan) with 1:31 to play in the first quarter, and Phelps leading 20-4. The first-ever Phelps hoopster to score 1,000 was Eric Young, who graduated last spring.
The 6-foot-5 Williams, from Philadelphia, is averaging 16.1 points in 21 games this season. He averaged 15.8 points per contest as a sophomore. The junior also is averaging 6.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.1 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game this season, and according to Phelps coach Matt Scavitto is getting various Division I looks from Nebraska, Iona, Siena, Florida State and North Carolina State, among others.
